UP opens up

There are two questions we’ve been asked a lot over the last few weeks – what do you think the Apple Watch will do, and how will it impact your business? Well now we know both. At Jawbone we welcome the entry of Apple into the smartwatch market. It’s good news for us because it’s another device that will connect to our UP system.

To understand how this will work, it’s important to understand the core purpose of UP. It is a rich, highly personalized coaching system, commonly regarded (and don’t just take our word for it) as the most complete and effective health and wellness experience on the market. We help our users see the correlations between their steps, sleep and food intake. We give them timely insights, useful information and most importantly, we help them get to bed earlier, get active, and eat better during the day. The personal stories from our users are inspiring and humbling like those recently shared from Pete or Brett. And in a recent survey, 9 out of 10 of our users said that UP has changed the way they act or think about their health.

Since we launched UP in 2011, the system has become smarter with each upgrade. We’ve introduced new tools, enabled over 1,500 developer integrations and expanded into over 40 countries.  Now, we are excited to move UP into the next phase of growth. Previously, the only way to access UP was through an UP or UP24 band. But as you may have read we have announced an important change to our system – to open it up to everyone.

Later this month we are launching a new UP app that allows anyone with a compatible smartphone, Android Wear device, Pebble smartwatch, or any wearable connected to the Health app for iOS 8 – such as the Apple Watch – to instantly join the UP community. In addition to making UP more widely available, we will also release an open device-connectivity framework for the new app, enabling device manufacturers to build products that communicate directly with the UP system via an open Bluetooth Smart® or WiFi protocol.

We remain committed to creating some of the most stylish and sophisticated wearable devices on the planet – and we are hugely excited about some of the great products we have to bring to the market. But by opening our system we can continue to embrace the innovation of others and we can build an even stronger community of people on UP.

Our vision is not about winning a hardware arms race, or just moving more units than the other guys. It’s about people, and the thing we all cherish the most – our health, and the health of our family and friends. By opening UP to everyone we have the best chance of realizing our vision of helping people to live better – and we look forward to working with others on the market to achieve that.
