Getting Started

To set up your American Express® Card and manage payments, visit the Payments section in the right menu of the UP® App.

How to set up your American Express Card with UP4

After the UP4 is paired with your phone, tap on the menu icon in the upper right-hand side of the UP app, then tap “Payments.” On the next screen, tap “Connect Your Card” if you are an existing American Express Card Member or tap “Apply for a Card” to apply for an American Express® Card. Then follow the instructions to connect your Card with your UP4. For program terms and conditions, visit americanexpress.com/UP/Terms.

Where can I use UP4 for payments?

Use your UP4™ band to pay in store, wherever American Express® contactless payments are accepted. For a selection of merchants that accept contactless payments, visit https://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/tap-to-pay/index.html.

How to make a payment with UP4

  1. When in store, look for the contactless symbol on the payments terminal.
  2. The payments chip is located near the clasp of your UP4™ band. It is indicated by a raised contactless symbol.
  3. To pay, hold the contactless symbol on your UP4™ band flush with the contactless symbol on the payments terminal.
  4. You will either hear a beep, see a light or the cashier will tell you when the transaction is complete.

How to make a return with UP4

Returns are processed similarly to regular Card purchases, although you may need to provide the last 5 digits of your Digital Account Number (which can be found in the UP app) at the merchant’s request.

What is my Digital Account Number and where do I find it?

The payment information associated with your UP4 is a separate and unique number from your plastic Card called a “Digital Account Number." For added protection, this Digital Account Number is used for payments with UP4 so your plastic Card number is never shared or transmitted with payment. A merchant may ask you for the last 5 digits of your Card. If using UP4 for that purchase, please provide the last 5 digits of your Digital Account Number. You can view the last 5 digits of your Digital Account Number at anytime in the UP app. Go to the Amex Payments section of your UP app and look for it below the image of your American Express Card.

How secure is paying with UP4?

Security and service are first and foremost for American Express. The payment information associated with your UP4 is a separate and unique number from your plastic Card called a “Digital Account Number.” For added protection, this Digital Account Number is used for payments with UP4 so your plastic Card number is never shared or transmitted with payment. Your American Express Card connected to your UP4 is backed by our industry leading service, protections and benefits and you are not liable for fraudulent charges if your UP4 is confirmed as lost or stolen.

How to suspend or disconnect payments with UP4

If you want to suspend payments or delete your Card from UP4, go to the Amex Payments section of the UP app and tap “Manage” directly below the image of your American Express Card. From there tap either “Suspend Payments” or “Disconnect.” You will receive an email from American Express confirming that you have suspended or disconnected your account. If you cannot access the UP app, please call the number on the back of your American Express Card for assistance.

How to resume payments with UP4

If you have suspended payments on your UP4 and would like to resume payments—go to the Amex Payments section of the UP app and tap “Manage” directly below the image of your American Express Card. From there tap “Resume Payments.” You will receive an email from American Express confirming that you have resumed payments.

Payments with my UP4 isn’t working. What should I do?

  • Check that your Jawbone tracker is eligible for payments. Only UP4 trackers that have a contactless symbol on the bottom strap are eligible.
  • Confirm that your Card is connected and active (not in “Suspend” mode) by visiting the Amex Payments section of the UP app. If you don’t see an image of your American Express Card, or if the image of the American Express Card is translucent (meaning it is in Suspend mode), follow the steps in the app to resume payments or re-connect your Card.
  • Wear the band around your wrist when making payments, with the payments symbol on the underside of your wrist. Avoid wearing clothing or other jewelry on/around the UP4, as this can make it difficult for the terminal to read the band.
  • Tap and hold the contactless symbol on the underside of the band to the terminal reader until you see the terminal light up or beep to indicate the transaction went through.
  • Confirm that the terminal accepts contactless payments by looking for the presence of the contactless symbol on the terminal. Please use your plastic Card if contactless payments are not accepted.

What if my UP4 is lost or stolen?

If you believe your UP4 has been lost, stolen or compromised in any way, you can quickly suspend payments or disconnect the payments feature in your UP4 by using the UP app. Go to the Amex Payments section of your UP app and tap “Manage” directly below the image of your American Express Card. From there tap either “Suspend Payments” or “Disconnect.” If you cannot access the UP app, please call American Express Customer Card immediately using the number on the back of your Card.

If your UP4 is stolen, contact American Express to report it by calling the Customer Service number on the back of your Card. You will not be liable for charges made with your UP4 if it is confirmed as lost or stolen.
