Food Logging (Android)

UP offers several ways to log your meals, making it easy to monitor what you eat and drink on a regular basis. Multiple studies have revealed that consistently recording your meals increases the likelihood of losing weight and maintaining weight loss.

Creating a Meal Entry

Meal entries are detailed records of food items that you log in the UP App. Keeping track of your meals provides valuable insight into your eating patterns while helping to reinforce healthier eating habits.

  1. To create a meal entry, tap the blue plus sign icon at the bottom of the UP home screen.
  2. Next, tap the green fork and knife icon to continue.

Selecting Food Items

The food logging menu in the UP App provides four different options to select food items, each designed to simplify your meal logging. In addition, each food item is assigned an UP® Food Score value to help you understand the healthiness of your meals at a glance.

Popular Items

The Popular Items feature lets you quickly choose from food items logged most often by the UP community. For easy access, food items that you personally log will appear at the top of the list.

  1. From the food logging menu, tap the name of an item to add it to your meal entry.
  2. From the meal entry screen, tap the name of the item once more to edit nutritional details (such as serving size or calories).
  3. To save the item to your food log, tap the checkmark icon in the upper-right corner.

Scan

The Scan feature allows for convenient logging of most food items with barcodes on their packaging. Once your scanned item is located, UP automatically populates your meal entry with the item’s default serving size and nutritional information.

  1. From the top of the food logging menu, tap the plus sign icon then select Scan.
  2. Next, align your mobile device’s camera with the barcode on the item’s packaging.
  3. Once UP locates the item, a green notification bar with the name of the item will appear at the top of the screen. If the information displayed is correct, tap the checkmark icon in the upper-right corner to continue.
  4. To edit nutritional details, such as calories, tap the name of the item. To save the item to your food log, tap the checkmark icon.

Note: If the item is not located, tap Enter Manually (to create a custom food item) or OK (to cancel and return to the previous screen) when prompted.

Search

The UP App offers an extensive food database, which is regularly updated and easily searchable.

  1. From the top of the food logging menu, tap the plus sign icon then select Type. From the search screen, type the name of the food item or ingredient.
  2. If the item appears in the search results, tap the item’s name, then tap the checkmark icon in the upper-right corner of the screen to continue to the meal entry screen.
  3. Tap the name of the item once more to edit nutritional details or tap the checkmark icon to save the item to your food log.

Note: If the item you searched for does not appear in the search results, tap the plus sign next to the search term to create a custom food item then tap the checkmark icon to continue.

Snap

The Snap feature is ideal for keeping a record of meal entries while on the go and for creating fully-customized food items. You can edit these entries at any time to include additional details, such as serving size and nutritional information.

  1. From the top of the food logging menu, tap the plus sign icon then select Snap.
  2. To take a new photo, tap Take Camera Picture. To select an existing image from your photo library, tap Pick From Gallery.
  3. For new photos, align your mobile device’s camera with the food item, then tap the camera icon. For existing photos, select an image from your mobile device’s gallery.
  4. For both new and existing photos, tap the checkmark icon in the upper-right corner to save your photo and continue to the meal entry screen.
  5. From the meal entry screen, tap the box below your photo to label your item and add nutritional info.
  6. Tap the checkmark icon when finished, then tap the checkmark icon once more to save the item to your food log.
