Using the UP App Without a Tracker

You can use the UP App without an UP tracker—on most iOS and Android devices—to manually log your sleep, meals, weight, mood, and workouts. In addition, the UP App can automatically track your steps without an UP tracker, via compatible mobile devices that import your step data into the UP system. UP can also track steps when connected with an Android Wear watch, Apple Watch, or any Apple HealthKit compatible device.

Compatible Devices

The UP App works on most mobile devices, but to get the most out of UP and enjoy some of our most popular features—including competing in step Duels—you’ll need a device that tracks your steps and imports your step data into the UP system.

Here are the mobile device compatibility requirements to track steps via the UP App:

 

iOS

  • iPhone 5S or newer
  • Apple Watch

Android

  • Devices running Android 4.4 or newer
  • Android Wear

After installing the app, you'll be asked to create a new UP account or sign in to access your existing UP account.

Understanding Your Data

The home screen of the UP App displays your personalized data via the Move and Sleep progress bars. Each progress bar increases as you get closer to your daily goal.

The activity feed below the progress bars on your home screen allows you to review your historical data, as well as data your UP friends have chosen to share.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Summary Screens

Tapping on your own activity entry provides a more detailed view of that entry, while tapping on your friends' activity entries lets you leave encouraging comments.

The Move summary screen displays how many steps you’ve taken on a particular day, your idle time, active time, as well as the total amount of calories burned—both resting and active. The Sleep summary screen displays the time you went to bed and the time you woke up, as specified when you manually log your sleep.

 

 

 

 

Setting Goals

UP automatically sets a daily goal of 10,000 steps and 8 hours of sleep, based on recommendations from the National Sleep Foundation and the World Health Organization.

To adjust either goal, tap Goals from the left-hand menu. Use the slider tool to increase or decrease either goal then tap the checkmark icon to save your changes.

To add a weight goal, tap Set Goal then choose Lose, Maintain or Gain weight. For the Lose and Gain options, use the slider tool to increase or decrease your goal weight then tap the checkmark icon to save your changes.

 

 

Logging a Workout

The Log Workout feature allows you to specify several step based and non-step based activities for more accurate calorie burn estimates.

To manually log a workout:

  1. Tap the Move progress bar from the UP App home screen.
  2. Next, tap the runner icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  3. Specify your activity type, effort level, start time and duration of your activity.
  4. Last, tap the checkmark icon to save your activity.

 

Logging Sleep

The Log Sleep feature allows you to track your bedtime and sleep duration to learn more about your sleep habits.

To manually log sleep:

  1. Tap the Sleep progress bar from the UP App home screen.
  2. Specify the time you went to sleep and the time you woke up.
  3. Tap the checkmark icon to save your sleep entry.

 

 

Finding Friends

UP is more fun with friends! Cheer each other on and help each other stay focused to achieve your goals. UP data shows that having at least one friend on UP results in 10% more daily steps, on average.

To find friends in the UP App:

  1. From the left menu, tap Friends.
  2. Tap the Add Friends icon in the upper right hand corner.
  3. Tap the Contacts or Facebook icon to locate your contacts and/or Facebook friends who use UP or type a name in the Search UP field.
  4. Tap the plus icon next to your friend’s name to invite them to connect. 

Once your friend accepts your invitation, your activities will be viewable in their activity feed and their activities will be viewable in your activity feed.

Duels

Duels are head-to-head step battles lasting 24 hours, 3 days or 1 week. Step more than your opponent to win.

To start a Duel:

  1. From the left menu, tap Duels.
  2. At the bottom of screen, tap Start a Duel.
  3. Tap Select Opponent then choose a friend to challenge.
  4. Tap the 3 Day shield to select the duration of the Duel.
  5. Slide the lock icon to Public or Private. 
  6. To propose the Duel to your friend, tap Send It!

You can also invite friends to UP through the Duels feature:

  1. From the left menu, tap Duels.
  2. At the bottom of screen, tap Start a Duel.
  3. Tap Select Opponent then tap Send Invite Email.
  4. Type your friend’s email address then tap Send. 
  5. You’ll receive a notification when your friend has joined UP.
